Coffee Alternative
Monday, November 9th, 2009I was at the point of drinking 4 to 6 cups of coffee a day and realized that I needed to cut that way down. I needed another option, but it had to be relatively easy to make here in the office and it couldn’t be one of those horrible energy drinks. Wheatgrass which is a great energizer wasn’t an option because the juicing would take too much space. I remembered one of our lesser known energizing products here at RhibaFarms, Chia seeds. Then I remembered a recipe I ran across on Local Harvest for Agua de Chia.
Experiment time: I decided to mix up a batch of Agua de Chia to see if it would give me and the rest of the people here in the office a much needed pick me up.
Step one.
Soak one cup of Chia seed in water until it is soft and spongy.
Step two.
Add a cup of sugar to two quarts of water. (We recommend healthier sweeteners such as raw honey or Stevia)
Step three.
Juice limes for a half cup of fresh lime juice then add to your soaking Chia seed.
Step four.
Combine your sweetened water with your soaked and limed Chia seed and stir.
Step five.
Serve and enjoy.
Conclusion: Agua de Chia did provide a nice charge and kept me working all through the day. It didn’t shock my system into hyper-mode like coffee does but it did get the job done and it was fun to drink with the floating gelatinous Chia in it, the taste was great too. Others in the office agreed that it give them a nice pick up. I think this drink will soon become a staple around here. Try it for yourself and let us know what you think.

Kim Brown Supports Rhibafarms
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009Kim Brown, a local health food advocate and mother, invited us into her home to introduce her and her friends to our living foods. It was great to meet so many health conscious folks and to talk about good foods.
Kim has found a way to revese Type 1 Diabetes in her daughter Kylie. Quoted from her blog “We have found that grain and dairy eliminated has helped reverse the signs of Type 1 Diabetes in youngest daughter Kylie. Through testing we found that her body needed those foods eliminated in order to rest her broken pancreas and start a regeneration process. It took 6 months. A total shock because we were expecting a lifetime to fight the disease.” Check out her blog post about RhibaFarms here. Also check out the rest of the blog at http://www.livingwithouttype1.blogspot.com/
Thanks for the write up and keep up the amazing work Kim!
Wheatgrass vs. Garlic Breath
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
In our last post I mentioned that we would be testing the array of claims found on the Internet about the many uses of wheatgrass. In this post we will be checking out one of the more useful functions of wheatgrass in regards to social situations. Will wheatgrass help with bad breath?
Suzie has just returned from lunch and tells us she had a heaping plate of garlic noodles. In our pre-wheatgrass breath check Melissa reports that it smells like Suzie has a mouth stuffed chock full of garlic cloves. As you all know garlic is a pretty hard odor to get rid off and admittitly I am very skeptical that the wheatgrass will be able to overcome such a strong scent. We juiced up one 4oz shot of wheatgrass and Suzie put it down the hatch.
Now for the moment of truth, the post wheatgrass breath check……Success! Melissa reports no sign of the garlic, just the smell of a freshly cut lawn. I am truly amazed with this one. Go out there and try it for yourself.

Wheatgrass Vs. Mosquito Bites
Monday, June 1st, 2009
The Internet is full of claims about the different uses of wheatgrass, other than drinking as a healthy juice. It’s hard to know what is actually factual and what is malarkey. We decided to do some experiments here at the Rhibafarms office. Our first experiment is to see if wheatgrass juice will relieve insect bites.
Melissa in our office was haveing an itch frenzy from her recent mosquito bites. That is her over to the right, looking frustrated with her mosquito bites. We juiced up some wheatgrass and applied it to a bandage. The bandage was taped onto her skin and left for about an hour. Melissa reported imediate relief and the itching subsided for about 6 hours!
Looks like this experiment was a sucess and itch relief can be added as another arrow into wheatgrass’s quiver of uses. Next post we will be taking up the challange of wheatgrass as a breath freshiner. Stay tuned.
